How to play Nonograms
- Each number describes a run of filled squares in that row or column. For example, 2 1 means two filled squares, at least one empty square, then one filled square.
- Choose Fill to mark the picture, Cross to mark an empty square, or Erase to clear a mark. Drag across squares to mark several at once. Undo takes back the whole stroke.
- Use both the row and column clues. A zero means the whole line is empty. Completed clues dim as you work; that is not a guarantee that the marks agree with every crossing line.
- Fill every picture square without filling any extras to finish. Crosses help you solve but are not required to win. The picture’s name is revealed at the end.
Where should I start?
Look for a line whose number equals its full length, or a zero. In a five-square row, a run of 3 must cover the middle square wherever it starts. The guided example shows how overlaps work; Hint explains a forced square from the current clues.
Do these puzzles need guessing?
The collection contains 24 original pictures. Every puzzle has been checked to be solvable by row and column deductions, with one solution. Grid size sets the level; larger grids do not necessarily mean every step is harder.
What do Check and Hint do?
Check marks entries that disagree with the picture without changing them. Hint fills or crosses one forced square and explains why. If an existing mark is wrong, it corrects one first. Hints are counted; wins with hints do not set your best unassisted time.
Can I use a keyboard?
Arrow keys move between squares. F fills, X crosses, and Backspace or Delete clears a square. Enter or Space uses the chosen marking mode. Ctrl+Z or Command+Z undoes a stroke; Ctrl+Shift+Z or Command+Shift+Z redoes it.
How are new puzzles chosen?
New game cycles through the pictures at the selected grid size. Each level remembers your position on this device. Restart keeps the same picture. Your current grid and up to 100 undo steps survive a reload; results are stored only in this browser.
Will my game be saved?
Your current game is saved on this device when browser storage is available. Reopening the page lets you resume it. Clearing site data removes that progress. The timer pauses when you leave the tab; New game replaces your current board.
